Day 1 - Seeding

Hi everyone.

My name is Tommy The Tomato.

This is my life story.

My parents, Scott and Laura Beylik, really love me.

I know this because my life begins in something really good for me. A seedling tray filled with a fine Coco Coir fiber.

Coco Coir fiber comes from the small fines of a coconut husk. My parents get this stuff all the way from India!

Look at the picture below...

See those hands? They belong to my dad Scott. He's been farming since forever and knows how to take good care of me. He's getting my bed ready. They call my bed a seedling tray.

See those hands? They belong to my uncle Danny. He works with my dad here on the farm. He loves me so much he wanted to help make my bed. See how he uses his fingers to make a nice comfortable spot for me and my brothers and sisters to sleep?

Hey! There I am! I'm the cute seed on the far left!

My uncle Danny is so sweet. He puts me and my brothers and sisters to bed one at a time by hand. He tells each and every one of us a bedtime story. Isn't he the best uncle ever!

Once uncle Danny gets us all in bed, he tucks us in by covering us up with more Coco Coir so we can sleep. I like it completely dark when I sleep. Uncle Danny is really good to us.

At night, I get thirsty. So before I go to sleep, uncle Danny gives me a drink of water. I told you, uncle Danny is the best!

Hey Look! Below! It's a video! If you'd like to see a short video of everything uncle Danny does for me, please click the play button.

Day 7 - First Sprout

Hi everyone!

Welcome back to my life story.

My mom Laura and dad Scott have been taking good care of me over the past 7 days here at Baylik Farms.

You'll never guess what they told me!

What I thought were my first two leaves are actually not leaves at all. They are something called my Cotyledon. Cotyledons are actually part of my seed and feed me until my true leaves develop.

Me and my brothers and sisters are part of an extended family of plants called "Dicots." It's short for Dicotyledonous. It's OK, I can't pronounce that word either. But my dad said it means before producing leaves we produce two Cotyledons.

OK. I know you've been waiting for it. Are you ready? Take a look at my baby picture below.

That's me! The very morning I first sprouted.

Well. All this blogging has made me tired. I think I'll take a nap.

But before I go, want to hear me talk?

I thought you would! Please watch the video below.

See you all next week!

Tommy.

Day 14 - First Leaves

Welcome back to my blog everyone!

It's good to see you all.

My mom Laura and dad Scott say hello.

I'm so excited! As you can see in the picture below. I GOT MY FIRST LEAVES!

You can see how my leaves look different than my cotyledons. My leaves have curly shapes and are kind of harry. If you click on the picture below, and look closely, you can see my tiny hairs. You can also see my little brother resting his cotyledon on top of mine. I think it makes him feel safe.

I asked my dad if I should shave the hairs but he said I'm too young to shave and is perfectly natural.

To celebrate my first leaves, my dad said I could play in the sprinklers! That's my dad's foot in the picture by the way. People say he's very fashionable.

It was so much fun playing sprinklers with my dad.

Aren't I the luckiest tomato in the world!

Well everyone, I've got to go now. My mom says I have to dry off and wash up for dinner.

I sure am glad I get to share my life story with all of you.

I'll see you next week!

Tommy.

Day 21 - I've Got Roots!

Hi Everyone!

It's me Tommy. Can you see me in the picture below with all of my brothers and sisters?

We're all so happy here at Beylik Family Farms in Fillmore. My mom Laura and Dad Scott take such great care of us.

Someone walked by today and called them "Helicopter Parents." I don't know what that means but is must mean they love us very much.

I have to tell you what happened today!

I was talking to my dad and I asked him why I'm feeling so much stronger over the past few days?

He picked me up and showed me something I didn't even know I had. They're called roots! I've got roots! See the picture below. I had no idea they were even down there.

Remember last week when I talked about how I was growing what looked like hair? My dad said my hair in the soil have turned into roots. He said my roots are how I eat and drink!

My dad said he is so proud of me for growing such strong healthy roots. See the picture below? He took a close up picture.

He's probably going to put this picture in his wallet and show it to all of his friends. My mom Laura shows my baby picture to her friends all the time.

Speaking of mom, she just told me I have to get off the computer now. I need to get rest so my roots can grow even bigger!

Oh! I almost forget. My dad had a friend take a short video of us together. You can watch it now below.

See you all next week!

Tommy.

Day 24 - A New Bed!

Hi Everyone. It’s me Tommy!

My dad Scott said I was allowed to blog once per week; but today he said he would make an exception to tell you the exciting news.

I’m getting a new bed!

My dad said my roots have grown so big that I'm outgrowing my seedling tray.

See the picture below.

20171003_143232.jpg

That’s my uncle Charo. He's preparing my new bed. Doesn't it look great! Uncle Charo takes such good care of me.

He also likes to tell jokes. Here's the joke he told me today. "Why do cows have bells? Because their horns don't work!" Uncle Charo is so funny.

You want to know what else my dad said?

I’m getting a present to go with my new bed!

This day just keeps on getting better and better!

My dad said the present is a surprise; but he did give me a hint. He said it had something to do with food. Any guesses what it might be?

OK. I’m moving to my new bed this Friday! As soon as I move, I’ll show you a picture of me in my new bed and a picture of my present. I can't wait!

See you all soon...

Tommy.
